Were you told that you may have age-related macular degeneration (AMD), or is there a history of AMD in your family? AMD is a condition that can affect a part of your eyes called the macula, especially as you grow older.

The macula is a special area of the retina (in the back of your eyes) that helps you to see clearly and in high detail. As people get older, the macula can wear out or become damaged, leading to what we call macular degeneration. Since the macula is important for your central vision, AMD can lead to difficulty with things like reading, watching TV, or recognizing faces.

While there are some risk factors for AMD that you cannot control (like your family history), there are others that you can (including diet, tobacco use, and others). If AMD is present, your eye doctor will be able to suggest ways to help or to prevent worsening. Often, treatment of AMD can be as simple as dietary changes, vitamin supplementation, or observation. Sometimes, referral to a retina specialist is necessary for treatment.
The bottom line is that early detection and treatment is key! Here at Loh Ophthalmology, it would be our honor to assist with this important part of your eye health.
